Arts Off Campus

On Friday, April 26 our class headed downtown to The Thurber House for our Arts Off Campus experience. The special area teachers (P.E., Music, Library and Art) planned four different experiences centered around Columbus native, author, and cartoonist- James Thurber.

Our first experience with Mr. Warner shared the collaboration of the drawings of James Thurber, work of Michael J. Rosen, and the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra on the piece Thurber's Dogs. We learned how certain music can evoke different feelings, in this case puppies! The students listened to different pieces from the orchestra and tried to match the music with James Thurber's puppy illustrations.

Next, we tried our hand at following the orchestra's tempo.

The last part of our experience with Mr. Warner was to form small groups and using different instruments, we re-created our own music piece that evoked a puppy moment (bumping into things, greeting the owner, puppies in the rain, etc.) and shared our pieces with the class!

Our next Arts Off Campus stop was music and movement with Mrs. Hackett and her special guest, Meme. We practiced using our bodies to show different feelings and emotions. We then, connected the work of James Thurber by brainstorming adjectives that described the many animals he drew in his work. We used our bodies to recreate different animals.

We then had the opportunity to creatively write a conversation between two animals. The students were encouraged by Meme to include as many adjectives, feelings, and emotions in our writing as possible. We had the chance to share our writing with the class.

After enjoying our lunch in the small park across from The Thurber House, we worked with Mrs. Jackson and her special guest, Mr. Muccio. Mr. Muccio is a cartoon artist. He shared his work with us, as well as, taught us how cartooning is a form of art that shares a message with the audience.

Mr. Muccio created a cartoon based on our current study about the Underground Railroad.

We then had the chance to try our hand at creating our own cartoon using our knowledge about the Underground Railroad.

Last, but not least was our chance to learn more about James Thurber and tour his house. A volunteer from The Thurber House shared her knowledge of James Thurber with us, which included a lot of funny stories about his childhood and his love of dogs!

We ended our visit searching for the five dogs that are scattered in the lawn of The Thurber House.

Our Arts Off Campus trip with a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the history of Columbus, James Thurber, and to connect the arts with reading, writing, and social studies.
